The duo exhibition of Zurich-based artists Patricia Bucher and Tetiana Kartasheva, A Piece of Land and Eternity, explores the multidimensional concept of a garden, delving into its physical manifestations as well as its profound philosophical significance. Both artists, drawing from their personal experiences and using their unique artistic languages, collaborate to create a unified visual stage by merging two distinct “gardens”.
The exhibition’s title is inspired by Gilles Clement’s quote: “To make a garden, you need a piece of land and eternity.” - the gardener, botanist, entomologist and writer who is known for his concept of the “Planetary Garden,” which argues for interconnectedness of all life on Earth and the responsibility of every citizen to be a gardener of the planet. His philosophy of “Garden in Movement” rejects traditional gardening practices based on control and intervention. Through all his works he is advocating for a more sustainable vision of progress based on knowledge and understanding rather than expansion and control.
The artists employ different mediums to convey their ideas. Bucher’s constructed grounded installation, made out of wooden panels, plays with the distinction between the natural and the artificial. Tetiana Kartasheva, through her ghostly lightweight drawings and collages on paper, explores her childhood memories of a garden as a paradise, a happy place that has been lost. Both artists address their personal associations, opening up new dimensions in their common work. They consciously engage in a dialogue with the gallery space, staging their project in relation to the low Baroque ceiling with molding, which serves as another reference to sentimental memory and the passage of time.
